On an extremely simple level? I'm a highly social individual. In order to actually be properly functional, I need to be able to interact in frequently positive ways with other people.

As disgusting as it feels to say, I imagine there is a parallel to the difference in how humans traditionally treated guard dogs and wolves. Big teeth are ok as long as they can be controlled and aimed at the proper people.
